Furniture tip: if water droplets bead, it’s typically pigmented/protected. If water absorbs quickly, it may be aniline/unprotected. Use Leather Identification.
Know your leather type (quick test)
The most important factor is whether your leather is pigmented/protected or aniline/unprotected. Try a small water droplet test in an inconspicuous area:
Pigmented / Protected Leather
- Paint-like protective coating
-
Water beads and does not absorb
- Common in auto + most furniture
Aniline / Unfinished Leather
- No protective topcoat (stain-like finish)
-
Water absorbs readily
- Often high-end furniture
